Daily Journals Published Volumes
The “Dagh-Registers van ’t Casteel Batavia” or Daily Journals of Batavia Castle 1624-1682 were published by three consecutive Vice-Directors of the National Archives in The Hague, and three consecutive Directors of the Landsarchief in Batavia, ANRI’s predecessor. The publication of 31 volumes between 1887-1931 took forty-four years of careful transcription. Altogether the publication comprises 16,175 pages of documents and 754 pages of indexes.
The nine volumes published by the archivists in The Hague were funded by the Ministry of Colonies. After publication of the initial volumes in The Hague, the publication was continued in Batavia. The next twenty-two volumes were supported by the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences or Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen. The content of the Daily Journals has to date been a significant resource for historians of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in the archipelago and beyond in maritime Southeast Asia. It is the single most important published source for the pre-1800 period, and has facilitated a range of significant studies on the maritime history of Southeast Asia.
Each volume has been scanned by Google Books on behalf of the Hathitrust Foundation. The originals were taken from the library of the University of Michigan. The scans are digitized with the use of optical character recognition (OCR) software. Each viewer has a full text search (click on the arrow left down the screen and choose ‘search’).
In former centuries, some of the original Daily Journals were already missing from the archives in Batavia and The Hague. By the late nineteenth century, when the then Landsarchivaris, J.A. van der Chijs (in office, 1892-1905) was supervising the publication, the following years were found to be missing:: 1630, 1635, 1638, 1639, 1646, 1649, 1650, 1651, 1652, 1654, 1655, 1658, 1660, 1662.
